"I have had a Takagi Tankless Water Heater in my house for 15 years and have not had a bit of problems. We all take long showers. And its great ... knowing I wont run out of hot water all the way thr0ugh the shower." ~ConsumerReports.org Reader Kent Milbergerf

Takagi calls themselves the “pioneers” in the tankless water heater industry, and that's a title they might just deserve. Like Noritz, Takagi is a Japanese company that's been creating tankless water heaters for half a century. They moved into the North American market only recently, in 1995.

Unlike most gas-powered tankless water heaters, which have energy efficiency ratings that generally fluctuate between 82% and 85%, Takagi's tankless water heaters have an energy efficiency rating of 92% for natural gas and 95% for propane. This incredible energy efficiency rating means that Takagi's tankless water heaters nearly out-perform even electric tankless water heaters (which have the highest energy efficiency rating in the tankless water heater world).

You'll Pay More, But You'll Get More

The downside of Takagi's tankless water heaters is that they are some of the most expensive tankless water heaters on the market. Together with the cost of the unit itself and installation, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $2,500. If you choose to purchase a Takagi, be sure to apply for a Recovery Act tax credit, which will pay for 30% of the upgrade up to $1,500.

Despite the higher cost, Takagi makes some of the best tankless water heaters available. Besides the aforementioned high energy efficiency rating, Takagi's tankless water heats have a number of other impressive features. For example, Takagi tankless water heaters are typically more durable than those of its competitors; most tankless water heaters have a life expectancy of about 20 years, whereas Takagi tankless water heaters last closer to 25 or even 30 years.

Committed to Safety and Green Energy

Takagi tankless water heaters include several safety features not offered by other brands:

* Water temperature is factory-set to 122 degrees Fahrenheit, to prevent accidental scalding.

* Built-in exhaust fan automatically expels potentially harmful gases.

* Computerized safety system self-monitors for any type of over-heating or gas build-up.

* The absence of a pilot light makes Takagis especially safe in earthquake-prone areas, such as northern California.

* Takagi has certifications on its models from the National Sanitation Foundation, the Canadian Standards Association, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Furthermore, Takagi works hard to make sure that its models are as green as possible. Besides being an Energy Star partner, Takagi is also a member organization of the US Green Building Council, the licensing organization for LEED-constructed buildings and homes.

In short, although Takagi tankless water heaters cost more than most other models, there's a good reason for the higher cost – Takagi makes a higher-quality product. If you're willing to pay a little extra for a Takagi, you'll be glad that you did.

The Takagi T-K3-Pro is based on Takagi's popular T-K3 residential tankless water heater, but is a more heavy-duty instrument intended for light commercial use, such as restaurants. It is also appropriate for residential applications where heavy demand is expected, such as houses that use space heating. For even larger applications, Takagi's Easy-Link technology allows you to connect up to four water heaters without needing a separate control unit. Takagi provides accessories that permit the T-K3-Pro to be installed outdoors, or placed inside a wall between studs, for maximum versatility in installation options.

The T-K3-Pro is the same size as the standard T-K3 (20.5" x 13.8" x 8.5", 40 lbs.), but uses HRS-35 copper tubing for its heat exchanger, adding the durability necessary to stand up to heavy use. It can work with either natural gas or liquid propane. Natural gas gives a thermal efficiency of 82%, while liquid propane has an efficiency of 85". The T-K3-Pro uses electric ignition, so there is no need to maintain a pilot light.

Depending on the setting, the T-K3-Pro can produce water at temperatures ranging from 99 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit -- the basic unit comes with dip switches that can be used to set the temperature to one of eight choices, and an optional remote control unit makes a wider variety of temperatures possible. Water pressure can be anywhere from 15 psi to 150 psi, although the manufacturer recommends more than 40 psi for best results. The T-K3-Pro activates at a rate of 1/2 gallon per minute, so it is possible to get hot water even with a relatively low flow, helping reduce waste. It has a top flow rate of 7 gallons per minute. Like all of Takagi's products, the T-K3-Pro water heater is Energy Star compliant.

The T-K3-Pro was named one of HousingZone.com's 100 best new products for 2009.

As the tankless water heater revolution has spread throughout the construction industry, few manufacturers have introduced models specifically targeted for commercial applications. These applications pose special issues in that output flow rates are much higher than those found in residential applications and as a result, input energy requirements are higher as well. The Takagi T-M50 tankless water heater is specifically engineered to meet these challenging demands.

Energy input is rated at 380,000 BTU with 80% efficiency and can provide up to 14.5 gpm with a temperature rise of 35°F. This is derated to a whopping 145°F temperature rise at 4 gpm. The T-M50 is supplied in either natural gas or LP versions, and has 8 built-in preset temperatures ranging from 100°F to 185°F, with 120°F being the default. Using an external controller, 18 setpoints can be utilized, and the controller allows both high temperature and default modes to be used. The heater features 1" NPT fittings for all gas and water connections. Exhaust is via 5" category III vent.

The Takagi T-M50 also features the capability to be linked together with other T-M50s depending on application demand. Up to 4 heaters can be linked together with no additional equipment, or 10 separate heaters can be linked together using an optional controller for added capacity. This configuration allows the system to produce up to 140 gpm to supply all commercial applications. The unit can handle water inlet pressures between 15 and 150 psi. The minimum flow rate required for activation is 0.5 gpm.

Safety features include built in freeze protection, a manual reset high limit switch, constant inlet and outlet temperature monitoring, as well as a flame sensor. The warranty offered by Takagi varies depending on application and system design.

Developed uniquely for commercial applications, the T-M32 Tankless Water Heater displays many outstanding qualities, such as versatility, durability, and ease of use. The T-M32 model demonstrates versatility by offering the flexibility of indoor or outdoor installation as well as the option of having a direct vent with the same unit. This model typically produces two-hundred and forty thousand BTU's per unit, which equals nine gallons per minute, but it can be easily linked or multi-linked to enable as many as twenty units to generate up to one-hundred and eighty gallons of water per minute.

The T-M32 unit is also extremely durable. The unit's drum is twenty-five percent thicker than most water heating units, which enables the drum to have a much better heat exchanger performance. The added thickness also allows the drum to resist more thermal stress. The T-M32 model also features an increase in fin pitch, which spaces the fins farther apart, thereby reducing build-up and further improving the heat exchanger's durability and decreasing condensation. The unit is comprised of HRS copper, which is stronger and more substantial than standard materials used for water heater construction. Since the T-M32 uses HRS copper, it prevents against erosion, cracks, and leaks, making this model an excellent purchase.

The Takagi T-M32 is quite accessible and easy to use and monitor. The T-M32 allows the customer to have control of the water valves with eight dipswitch temperature settings, 100F, 115F, 120F, 135 F, 145F, 155F, 165F, and 185F, that are perfect for commercial applications. This water heater displays a seven-segment LED to show any errors with the unit, and while the Takagi T-M32 comes with a remote controller for convenience, the controller is not needed to accurately assess problems. Another special feature of this water heater is ignition indicators. These indicators increase safety by showing the customer any burners that are currently in use.
All in all, the Takagi T-M32 Tankless Water Heater helps the customer by not only providing a quality source of heat, but also by saving time and energy by being easy to use, versatile, and durable.

The unit actually uses the first heat exchanger as a preheater unit to recovers wast energy that would go out the vent to preheat incoming water. Condensate from this unit is pretreated internally and discharged via a normal drain line.

Aa a result of the two exchanger design, the heater is extremely efficient (about 92%) and yields a ∆T of 60ºF at a flow rate of 6.1 GPM for inlet temperature of 60ºF or higher. For colder climates, this specification drops to 4.3 GPM. Minimum flow rate is 0.75 GPM for Under ideal conditions, the Takagi T-H1 Tankless Water Heater can deliver over 10 GPM and is intended for either whole-house or other high demand situations. The unit can also supply water up to 182ºF, meeting requirements necessary for sanitary applications needing 180ºF water as a code requirement.

Input BTU ranges from 190-199,000 BTU based on fuel (either LP or NG) and the unit is rated for water input pressures from 15-150 PSI. All input and output connections for both water and gas are 3/4” NPT fittings with a 4" flue. The built in thermostat offers four preset temperature settings: 113, 122, 140, and 182°F. An optional remote temperature control offers 16 presets as well as a high-temperature mode for sanitary requirements.

Safety features include built in freeze protection, a manual reset high-limit switch, a flue backdraft pressure switch, and separate monitoring of all inlet and outlet water temperatures. The Takagi T-H1 Tankless Water Heater is backed by a 10 year heat exchanger, 5 year parts warranty for residential applications. The warranty for commercial applications, however, is 3 years on the heat exchanger and 3 years on parts.

The T-K3 tankless water heater is one of the more popular units manufactured by Takagi USA. It is also one of the smallest tankless water heaters that they make. Its small size (a little over 13 inches) makes it easy to recess into walls between the studs. This means that it can be installed near the points in your house where you need hot water, rather than in another part of the house where the water cools down on its way to you. It is also suitable for outdoor installations.

"I had a Takagi-K3 installed in a three family home back in Febuary '08. I never even told the tenants I was installing the unit. To this day no one has had a complaint. I haven't seen much of a difference in my gas bill (due to this years rate being higher than lasts). However I know it could be a lot worse. My only regret is I didn't do it sooner." ~ConsumerReports.org Reader Michael

Like many tankless heaters made by Takagi, the T-K3 can be installed in parallel. Up to four units can be linked simultaneously to satisfy your family's need for hot water. Four units will provide over twenty gallons per minute when increasing the temperature of the water 60 degrees, or 26 gallons per minute when raising the temperature 50 degrees.

Many water heaters offer only four temperature settings. The Takagi T-K3, on the other hand, offers eight settings, ranging from 104 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. There is an optional remote control that allows the user to set their desired temperature to a setting other than the presets. The T-K3 has a large number of other accessories available for it, including direct vent conversion kits, wall ventilation terminators, and backflow prevention kits.

Tankless water heaters provide a lot of benefits, and the TK-3 maximizes all of the efficiencies that tankless heaters provide. In order to prevent the unit from freezing when water isn't being used, the TK-3 has built-in heating blocks. This freeze prevention protects the heat exchanger of the device. It uses electronic ignition controlled via computer, which eliminates the need for a pilot light (and the associated utility cost). Overall, the Takagi T-K3 is an excellent tankless water heater that will meet all of your water heating needs while providing much needed relief to your wallet as well.

As many consumers look to conserve energy the concept of tankless water heaters have become popular. Rather than heating water continuously, tankless water heaters feature on-demand heating of water. These are often also called endless supply water heating systems because the supply of hot water never runs out as long as the instantaneous demand rating for the water heater is not exceeded.

The Takagi T-K3-OS Tankless Water Heater is offered in either a propane or natural gas powered heater for outdoor installations, with a maximum input rating of 190,000 BTU/hr. The heater is 13.8 inches wide, only weighs 40 pounds and can easily fit between two studs for a clean, neat installation. In addition, the heater uses a powered venting system that requires no additional Category III venting for ease of installation.

The heater automatically switches on when a flow rate of 0.5 GPM is detected, although flow rates can be sustained as low as 0.4 GPM and as high as 7.0 GPM. At maximum rated flow, the maximum temperature rise which can be expected is 40 deg F. The built-in thermostat is a four stage adjustable thermostat with fixed settings of 113, 122, 140 and 167 deg. F, with a default setting of 122 deg. F. The unit also can be conveniently equipped with a remote sensing thermostat that has 16 different setpoints.

The Takagi T-K3-OS Tankless Water Heater is equipped with 3/4" NPT inlets and is capable of handling water pressure ranging from 15 to 150 PSI. The company offers a 10 year warranty on the heat exchanger and 5 years on parts for residential use. The warranty terms for commercial applications, however, is 3 years on the heat exchanger and 3 years on parts. The heater also offers such safety features as built in freeze protection, input and output temperature monitoring as well as a flame sensor to eliminate the danger of gas leakage.

The Takagi T-K3-OS Tankless Water Heater is a proven, economical solution to water heating needs. In fact, most users can expect to see up to a 45% reduction in their gas heating bill.

"We have a Takagi Jr gas HW heater in our CT house (1-1/2 baths), 3-4 people and it works great. My gas bills went down a lot after switching to tankless, takes a little longer for hot water to come out of faucet, but its better than having and old water heater corrode out and leak into your basement w/o warning. Been working fine for 3 years without any problems" ~ConsumerReports.org Reader Bill

Takagi has been producing quality tankless water heaters for over fifty years. Released in 2003, the T-KJr is their smallest unit. With gas inputs of up to 140,000 BTU per hour, the T-KJr is designed to be comparable to a 40-gallon traditional water heater.

A cost-efficient and environmentally friendly tankless water heater, the Takagi T-KJr is wall-mounted and has an efficiency rating of 81% with natural gas or 83% with propane. It can be converted into a direct-vent model with the optional TV09 conversion kit for installation in a confined space with limited intake air flow.

The T-KJr can supply more than 180 gallons of hot water ever hour on demand. Since there is no bulky tank, it frees up valuable storage space while delivering convenience, fuel savings, and dependability. It features automatic gas and water valves, electronic ignition, and computerized controls.

Safety is assured with an efficient system of circuits and sensors that check for over or under-heating. The computerized controls continually monitor incoming water temperatures, water levels, gas levels, air quality, and venting conditions.

The T-KJr liquid propane version qualifies as an Energy Star unit and may be eligible for federal tax credits. Takagi is committed to quality and innovation. They provide a 10 year warranty on the heat exchanger and 5 years on all other parts.

The unit has four preset Fahrenheit temperatures: 113°, 122°, 140°, and 182°. Other temperature requirements can be met with the addition of the TK-RE20 temperature controller. For technical specifications see the Takagi product page.

The T-KJr is a small, but powerful tankless water heater that can provide all the hot water needs for a domestic unit with up to two bathrooms or a small business operation. It can also support hydronic baseboard or radiant floor heating applications.

Whether used as a supplemental source or the primary unit, the T-KJr is a reliable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly solution to a variety of water heating needs.
