As the tankless water heater revolution has spread throughout the construction industry, few manufacturers have introduced models specifically targeted for commercial applications. These applications pose special issues in that output flow rates are much higher than those found in residential applications and as a result, input energy requirements are higher as well. The Takagi T-M50 tankless water heater is specifically engineered to meet these challenging demands.

Energy input is rated at 380,000 BTU with 80% efficiency and can provide up to 14.5 gpm with a temperature rise of 35°F. This is derated to a whopping 145°F temperature rise at 4 gpm. The T-M50 is supplied in either natural gas or LP versions, and has 8 built-in preset temperatures ranging from 100°F to 185°F, with 120°F being the default. Using an external controller, 18 setpoints can be utilized, and the controller allows both high temperature and default modes to be used. The heater features 1" NPT fittings for all gas and water connections. Exhaust is via 5" category III vent.

The Takagi T-M50 also features the capability to be linked together with other T-M50s depending on application demand. Up to 4 heaters can be linked together with no additional equipment, or 10 separate heaters can be linked together using an optional controller for added capacity. This configuration allows the system to produce up to 140 gpm to supply all commercial applications. The unit can handle water inlet pressures between 15 and 150 psi. The minimum flow rate required for activation is 0.5 gpm.

Safety features include built in freeze protection, a manual reset high limit switch, constant inlet and outlet temperature monitoring, as well as a flame sensor. The warranty offered by Takagi varies depending on application and system design.
