Who Makes The Best Tankless Water Heater?
Tankless hot water heaters are the wave of the future when it comes to providing both residential and commercial hot water. Generally speaking, a tankless hot water heater is as much as 30% more energy efficient than a traditional tank water heater. The advantages of a tankless water heater, therefore, are both a lower energy bill, as well as lowering a home's overall greenhouse gas emissions.
Tankless water heaters, just like any other product, are not all created equally. Within the industry, there are certainly some well-respected leaders whose products are recognized as superior. In the industry of tankless hot water heaters, these manufacturers are: Noritz, Paloma, and Bosch.
If there is a single industry leader in the business of tankless hot water heaters, it's probably Noritz. Noritz, which was originally Japan-based Noritsu Bath Industry, produced the first tankless hot water heater in 1966. By 1970, they were selling their natural gas-powered tankless hot water heaters. In 2006, Noritz became the first company whose tankless hot water heaters earned certification by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, or ASME. The top Noritz models have piping that's 25% thicker than the piping of its competitors, thus making their hot water heater units more efficient than others.
Most of Paloma's tankless water heater units compete with Noritz for high energy efficiency standards, with Energy Factors for most models ranging between 0.82 and 0.84 – thus falling within the government's standards for receiving a tax credit for energy efficient appliances. A comforting feature of Paloma tankless water heater models are the high-quality safety features, which come standard with all of their digital models. The price of Paloma models has also dropped significantly over the last year, making these high-quality tankless units easier to purchase than ever.
Owners of Bosch tankless water heaters generally have positive things to say about their units. The Bosch AquaStar line is not designed to serve the whole home, but is a great addition to a kitchen sink, where on-demand hot water can mean an instant cup of tea or hot water for a French-press coffee maker. Like Noritz and Paloma, Bosch's AquaStar line also carries a 12-year warranty. Bosch tankless water heater systems also tend to be less expensive than Paloma or Noritz. The only downside is that not all of Bosch's units reach an Energy Factor rating of 0.82, meaning that not all units qualify for Recovery Act tax credits.
